Snowmobile and Powersports Fires

Snowmobiles, ATVs, UTVs (side-by-sides), dirt bikes, and personal watercraft catch fire while running, while parked hot in a garage or trailer, or while charging or on a battery tender. The fire can destroy the machine, the garage, and the home. As with vehicle fires, the recovery is usually against a manufacturer with a known defect, a dealer or repair shop that worked on it, or an installer of add-ons.

Identify

Hands off until the expert arrives. Nothing at the scene gets touched, moved, repaired, or thrown out until the origin and cause investigator has secured it. Evidence that's moved early can sink the whole recovery.

1. Identify

How these fires start

  • Known defects covered by recalls, like fuel leaks, overheating, or wiring that chafes
  • Fuel or oil leaking onto hot exhaust after service
  • Aftermarket add-ons: heated grips, lights, winches, sound systems, and performance parts
  • Battery tenders or chargers left connected
  • Parking the machine hot in a garage or enclosed trailer next to things that burn
